How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Head of Learning & Development (from a smaller/mid-sized company)
3-5 years in a Head of L&D roleSkills to master
- Scaling talent programmes for larger organisations, managing multi-million-pound budgets, influencing at the C-suite level, and leading diverse teams across multiple geographies.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully grew an L&D function from scratch or significantly scaled an existing one.
- Demonstrated ability to link L&D initiatives directly to business outcomes (e.g., revenue growth, cost savings).
- Experience presenting to and influencing executive leadership and Board members.
- Managed a team of at least 10-15 people, including other managers.

Senior Manager, Talent Management (from a larger enterprise)
5-7 years in a Senior Manager or equivalent roleSkills to master
- Deepening strategic foresight, mastering enterprise-level change management, P&L ownership, and building a strong external professional brand.
You're ready to move on when
- Owned a significant talent programme or portfolio with a budget of over £1M.
- Led cross-functional initiatives involving multiple business units.
- Consistently delivered measurable improvements in talent metrics (e.g., retention, time-to-productivity).
- Mentored and developed other managers or senior individual contributors.
