The scoreboard, honestly: the hard targets, how often each one is actually looked at,
and the quiet human signals that never make it onto a dashboard.
Billable Hours & Utilisation Rate
The amount of time you spend directly on client work that we can charge for, and how efficiently you use your working hours.
Target · Maintain >85% utilisation rate (e.g., 7 hours billable per 8-hour day)If your target is 1,500 billable hours a year, you'd aim for roughly 125 hours a month. We'll track this closely, but it's not the only thing that matters.
Accuracy of Research & Drafting
How often your initial research findings or draft advice need significant correction or amendment by a senior colleague.
Target · <10% significant error rate on first drafts of memos or adviceYou draft a research memo on 'place of supply' rules for digital services. If it requires only minor tweaks to phrasing, that's a win. If the core legal analysis is off, we'll flag it and learn from it.
Turnaround Time on Assigned Tasks
How quickly and efficiently you complete specific tasks, such as drafting a section of a report or analysing a client's transaction data, against agreed deadlines.
Target · Complete 90% of assigned tasks within agreed deadlinesYou're asked to analyse a client's sales data for potential VAT errors by Friday. Delivering a clean, summarised analysis by then, even if it means a late night, counts.
Client Matter Profitability (for smaller matters)
For smaller, routine client queries you manage more independently, how well you keep within the agreed budget or time estimate.
Target · Manage matters at >15% profit margin or within 5% of estimated budgetYou take the lead on a client query about a specific VAT registration issue. If you estimate 5 hours and complete it in 4.5, that's great. If it balloons to 10 hours without good reason, we'll need to understand why.
Quality of Legal Reasoning
Your ability to construct a logical, well-supported legal argument based on legislation and case law, even if the initial conclusion isn't spot on.
- Your draft memos show clear, step-by-step reasoning. You can explain the 'why' behind your conclusions. Senior colleagues feel confident in your analytical approach, even if they tweak the final advice.
Proactive Issue Identification
Spotting potential problems or additional areas of advice for the client that weren't explicitly asked for, or raising concerns about data integrity.
- You flag a potential customs duty issue while working on a VAT query. You point out inconsistencies in client data before you're asked to. You suggest a follow-up question to the client that a senior colleague hadn't considered.
Client Communication & Responsiveness
How well you communicate with clients on routine matters, keeping them informed and responding to their queries promptly and professionally.
- Clients give positive feedback (informally or formally) about your responsiveness. Your emails are clear, concise, and professional. You manage expectations well and don't leave clients guessing.
Team Collaboration & Support
Your willingness to help out colleagues, share knowledge, and contribute positively to the team environment.
- You offer to help a junior colleague who's stuck. You share interesting articles or case law with the team. You're seen as a reliable and helpful member of the team, not just someone who does their own work.
