Roughly 4-7 years at the Senior level, plus prior experience.Skills to master
- Moving from owning workstreams to leading entire projects and mentoring juniors. You'll need to develop stronger strategic thinking, stakeholder negotiation, and initial team leadership skills.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 3-5 complex product structuring projects from concept to Shariah Board approval.
- Consistently mentored junior analysts who have shown significant development.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve significant compliance issues independently.
- Proactively identified and proposed solutions for process improvements across the team.

From Lead Islamic Finance Structurer (L4)
Around 3-5 years at the Lead level, plus prior experience.Skills to master
- This is a natural step. You'll need to broaden your focus from architecting individual products to setting the strategic direction for an entire product suite. P&L ownership, organisational design, and managing managers will be key new skills.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully designed and launched 2-3 'first-of-its-kind' Shariah-compliant products.
- Managed the entire Shariah approval process for high-value, complex deals.
- Built and led a small team or project group effectively.
- Influenced senior stakeholders on strategic product decisions.

From External Shariah Advisory / Consulting
Varies widely, but typically 10-15 years in a senior advisory capacity.Skills to master
- Translating broad advisory experience into direct P&L accountability and internal team leadership. You'll need to adapt to an in-house corporate environment, focusing on execution and commercial viability within a specific firm's context.
You're ready to move on when
- Provided Shariah advisory to multiple financial institutions on product development and compliance.
- Demonstrated commercial acumen beyond pure Shariah interpretation.
- Experience managing client relationships and project teams.
- A clear understanding of the operational challenges of implementing Shariah principles within a financial institution.
