The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Treasury Accountant / Analyst
3-5 years in previous roleSkills to master
- You'd have already mastered complex cash flow forecasting, taken ownership of significant bank reconciliations, and perhaps even started dabbling in hedge accounting. You'd be known for your precision and ability to solve tricky operational problems independently.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering accurate and timely cash forecasts with minimal supervision.
- Successfully leading smaller, well-defined treasury projects (e.g., a new bank account setup).
- Actively mentoring new joiners or less experienced team members.
- Identifying and proposing improvements to existing treasury processes.
- 2
Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Specialist
4-6 years in FP&ASkills to master
- Coming from FP&A, you'd bring strong financial modelling, budgeting, and variance analysis skills. You'd need to quickly get up to speed on the operational aspects of treasury, like payment processing, bank relationships, and specific financial instruments.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven ability to build robust financial models and conduct in-depth variance analysis.
- Strong understanding of business drivers and how they impact financial performance.
- Excellent communication skills, particularly in translating financial data for business stakeholders.
- A clear interest and some foundational knowledge in cash management and liquidity.
- 3
Big Four Audit / Advisory (Treasury Focus)
5-7 years in audit/advisorySkills to master
- You'd bring a deep understanding of internal controls, risk management frameworks, and potentially IFRS/ASC accounting standards. You'd need to transition from an advisory role to an operational one, getting hands-on with daily treasury tasks and system configurations.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience auditing or advising on treasury operations for corporate clients.
- Strong grasp of internal controls, compliance, and financial reporting standards.
- Ability to quickly learn new systems and processes.
- A desire to move from a project-based advisory role to an embedded operational leadership position.
