How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

5-8 years as an agent, then 2-4 years as a Senior Rep/Team LeadSkills to master
- Exceptional individual performance, informal mentoring of peers, handling complex escalations, contributing to process improvements, demonstrating leadership potential.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeds individual performance targets (CSAT, FCR).
- Acts as a go-to person for complex issues and questions from peers.
- Proactively identifies and suggests solutions for team-wide challenges.
- Volunteers to mentor new hires or lead small initiatives.
- Demonstrates strong communication and de-escalation skills.

External Hire (Experienced Team Lead)
10-15 years total experience in customer service, with 3-5 years in a similar team lead/manager role elsewhere.Skills to master
- Proven track record of managing and developing a team, strong understanding of contact centre operations, experience with performance management and coaching, ability to quickly adapt to new systems and processes.
You're ready to move on when
- Can articulate specific examples of successful team management and development.
- Demonstrates a deep understanding of contact centre metrics and how to influence them.
- Has experience implementing process improvements that yielded measurable results.
- References speak highly of their leadership and coaching abilities.
- Can clearly outline their approach to onboarding and integrating into a new team.
