The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Lead Carbon Reduction Strategist (L4)
3-5 years as a LeadSkills to master
- At this stage, you've already mastered the technical aspects. You'll need to develop your team leadership, strategic planning, and executive communication skills. This means moving from 'doing' to 'leading' and 'influencing'.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 major decarbonisation projects end-to-end, delivering measurable reductions.
- Consistently mentored junior team members, with at least one achieving promotion under your guidance.
- Presented strategic recommendations to senior management with positive outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships and navigate internal politics.
- 2
From Senior Carbon Reduction Specialist (L3) at a larger organisation
5-8 years as a Senior SpecialistSkills to master
- You'll need to broaden your scope from specific projects to owning the entire corporate footprint. This means developing a more holistic, strategic view, and gaining experience in managing direct reports and engaging at a more senior level.
You're ready to move on when
- Owned a significant portion of a company's GHG inventory (e.g., all Scope 3 categories) and successfully managed external assurance for it.
- Proactively identified and implemented process improvements that led to measurable efficiency gains in carbon reporting.
- Acted as an informal leader or project manager for cross-functional teams.
- Developed strong relationships with external auditors and regulators.
- 3
From Sustainability Consultant (Manager level)
Typically 3-5 years as a Manager-level consultantSkills to master
- You'll bring broad industry knowledge, but you'll need to deepen your understanding of our specific business operations and internal culture. The shift is from advising multiple clients to deeply embedding yourself in one organisation and driving long-term change.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed multiple client engagements related to GHG accounting, decarbonisation strategy, or climate risk.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable business recommendations for clients.
- Strong project management skills, including budget and resource allocation.
- Experience building and maintaining client relationships at a senior level.
