- Moving from owning individual analyses to leading full projects, developing new models independently, and effectively mentoring junior team members. You'd also need to get really good at influencing stakeholders.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivers high-quality, actionable insights on complex problems without significant supervision.
- Has successfully built and validated at least two new predictive models from scratch.
- Proactively identifies opportunities for analytical improvement and proposes solutions.
- Receives positive feedback on informal guidance provided to junior colleagues.

From Senior Data Analyst / Data Scientist (other industries)
1-2 years (with relevant domain upskilling)Skills to master
- You'll bring the strong technical skills. The focus will be on quickly absorbing the nuances of CQHS regulations, domain-specific hazards, and the 'insider terminology' (like ALARP, Swiss Cheese Model). You'll need to learn how to apply your analytical skills to prevent incidents, not just optimise sales.
You're ready to move on when
- Demonstrates a rapid understanding of CQHS principles and regulatory frameworks.
- Successfully applies existing data science skills to identify and analyse safety/compliance risks.
- Actively seeks out and incorporates feedback from EHS domain experts.
- Can articulate the unique challenges of data quality and stakeholder management in a safety-critical environment.

From Senior EHS Specialist with strong data skills
2-4 years (with technical upskilling)Skills to master
- You'll have the deep domain knowledge. The challenge will be to significantly deepen your technical skills in Python/SQL for predictive modelling, advanced data manipulation, and building robust data pipelines. You'll need to move beyond just using dashboards to building and maintaining them.
You're ready to move on when
- Has completed advanced data science certifications or relevant self-study.
- Can demonstrate personal projects involving predictive modelling or complex data integration.
- Proactively identifies opportunities to apply data analytics to EHS challenges.
- Understands the limitations and potential of various analytical techniques.
