Criminal Law for Associate ParalegalsReal unit · NALP
You'll gain a comprehensive understanding of criminal law in the UK, analysing the nature and elements of crime, general defences, and specific offences such as homicide, theft, and fraud. The unit also covers the concept of attempt and special defences.

Employment Law & Practice for Associate ParalegalsReal unit · NALP
This unit provides learners with knowledge of employment law and practice, distinguishing between employees, workers, and the self-employed. You'll explore contract terms, lawful termination of employment, and the principles of unfair dismissal and redundancy.

What you'll be able to do

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the distinction between employees, workers and self-employed and identify the terms within a Contract of Employment and their scope and impact.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of how the employment relationship can be lawfully terminated.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the principles and practice of ‘unfair dismissal’; ‘wrongful dismissal’ and redundancy.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply the law on employees’ rights under both statute and common law.
English Legal System for Associate ParalegalsReal unit · NALP
You'll develop a detailed understanding of the English legal system, including court hierarchies, legal personnel roles, and law-making processes. The unit also emphasises the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution within the legal framework.

Law of Tort for Associate ParalegalsReal unit · NALP
This unit offers a comprehensive understanding of the tort of negligence, including liability elements and occupiers’ liability principles. You'll also develop skills in drafting client communications in accordance with professional requirements.

What you'll be able to do

  • Understand the fundamental nature of liability in the tort of negligence.
  • Understand the key elements required to establish negligence (e.g., duty of care, breach of duty, causation, damage).
  • Apply the professional requirements when drafting written communications to clients in relation to tort matters.
  • Understand the principles of occupiers’ liability under the relevant legislation.
  • Understand the duties owed by occupiers to different categories of entrants onto their premises.
  • Understand the general defences which may be available to a defendant in a tort claim (e.g., contributory negligence, consent, illegality).
  • Understand the remedies available to a claimant in a tort claim (e.g., damages, injunctions).
