Role Purpose & Context
Role Summary
The Chief Circularity Officer is responsible for defining and delivering our company's entire circular economy vision and strategy. This means you'll be the driving force behind how we design, make, use, and recover products and materials across our global operations. You'll sit right at the top, reporting directly to the CEO and presenting regularly to the Board, making sure our long-term viability is baked into every strategic decision. When this role is done well, we'll be recognised as a market leader, attracting investors and talent, and seeing significant financial returns from new circular business models. If it's not, we risk falling behind competitors, facing regulatory fines, and missing out on crucial market opportunities. The challenge is immense: you're changing decades of linear thinking and operational habits. The reward, however, is building a truly resilient, sustainable business that leaves a lasting positive impact on the world.

Primary Traits
- Trait: Pragmatic Idealist (Enterprise Scale)
- Manifestation: You can paint a compelling picture of a zero-waste, regenerative future for our entire global enterprise, inspiring thousands. But you'll also meticulously craft a multi-year financial model showing how a £100M investment in new circular infrastructure delivers a 15% IRR. You'll celebrate a 5% reduction in virgin material use across a product portfolio as a huge win, all while pushing for 100% elimination down the line. It's about balancing the grand vision with the gritty reality of quarterly earnings.
- Benefit: At this level, pure idealism gets you nowhere with the Board, and pure pragmatism means you're just optimising the status quo. You need to bridge the gap, translating the ethical imperative into a compelling business case that resonates with the CFO, the Head of Operations, and crucially, our investors. Without this, truly transformative change simply won't happen.
- Trait: Systems Architect
- Manifestation: When you look at our entire product lifecycle, you don't just see a single product; you see a complex, interconnected web of suppliers, manufacturers, logistics networks, sales channels, and end-of-life infrastructure across multiple continents. You can identify how a policy change in China affects our packaging strategy in Europe, or how a new material choice impacts both our carbon footprint and our reverse logistics costs. You're constantly thinking about the whole puzzle, not just individual pieces.
- Benefit: The circular economy is inherently systemic. A decision in one part of the business, or one region, can have massive, unforeseen consequences elsewhere. As the CCO, you're responsible for orchestrating this entire system. Missing a critical connection means you'll either create new problems, or worse, launch initiatives that look good on paper but fail spectacularly in the real world because they didn't account for the full picture.
- Trait: Relentless Influencer & Board Whisperer
- Manifestation: You'll spend half your life in boardrooms, investor calls, and executive committee meetings, not just reporting, but actively shaping the conversation. You understand that the CEO's bonus is tied to shareholder value, and you'll frame circularity as a direct driver of that. You'll persist through initial scepticism from the Board, reframing the benefits of a multi-year transformation for each specific director, until you secure their full buy-in. It's about strategic persuasion at the highest levels.
- Benefit: As CCO, you have virtually no direct operational authority over the vast majority of the business you need to change. Your success hinges entirely on your ability to influence, persuade, and build deep trust with the CEO, the Board, and your C-Suite peers. You need to be a master negotiator and communicator, capable of winning hearts and minds, and securing the significant capital investment required for enterprise-wide transformation.
Supporting Traits
- Trait: Tenacity for Transformation
- Desc: You'll need the grit to push multi-year, multi-million-pound programmes forward despite inevitable institutional inertia, budget cycles, and shifting market priorities. This isn't a quick win; it's a marathon, and you're leading it.
- Trait: Commercial Acumen (P&L Owner)
- Desc: An innate understanding of how a global business makes money, how circularity impacts the P&L, and how to build robust financial models that stand up to scrutiny from the Board and investors. You're not just a sustainability expert; you're a business leader.
- Trait: Ambiguity Navigator
- Desc: Comfortable defining strategy and making multi-million-pound decisions with incomplete data, especially in emerging circular supply chains and nascent markets. You'll need to chart a course where no clear map exists, and be confident in your judgment.
Primary Motivators
- Motivator: Driving Systemic Change & Legacy
- Daily: You're motivated by the idea of fundamentally altering how a large organisation impacts the planet, leaving a lasting legacy that goes beyond quarterly results. This shows up in your relentless pursuit of ambitious, long-term goals, even when faced with short-term pressures.
- Motivator: Market Leadership & Innovation
- Daily: You thrive on being at the forefront of industry transformation, setting new standards and disrupting traditional business models. You'll constantly scan the horizon for new technologies, policies, and business opportunities that can give us a competitive edge.
- Motivator: Board-Level Influence & Impact
- Daily: The opportunity to directly influence the highest levels of corporate governance and strategy is a key driver. You enjoy the challenge of communicating complex ideas to a diverse Board and seeing your vision translated into enterprise-wide policy.
Potential Demotivators
Honestly, this role isn't for everyone. If you need quick wins and immediate gratification, you'll struggle. You'll spend years building the foundations for change, often facing resistance and having to compromise. You'll present a brilliant 5-year strategy only to have the Board ask about next quarter's earnings. You'll see promising pilot projects get stuck in 'pilot purgatory' for years because of internal politics or lack of operational appetite. You'll constantly battle the perception that circularity is a 'cost centre' rather than a value driver, and you'll have to fight for every pound of investment. If you can't handle long-term games, constant persuasion, and the slow grind of cultural change, this won't be the right fit.
Common Frustrations
- The 'tyranny of quarterly reporting' overriding long-term strategic investments.
- Resistance from business units to fundamentally change established, profitable linear processes.
- Difficulty getting robust, auditable data from global supply chains for enterprise-level reporting.
- The slow pace of regulatory change, or conversely, sudden, unexpected policy shifts that require rapid, costly adaptation.
- Balancing the needs of diverse, sometimes conflicting, internal and external stakeholders (e.g., investors vs. activists vs. operations).
What Role Doesn't Offer
- A quiet, predictable routine with clear, short-term deliverables.
- Direct operational control over most of the functions you need to influence.
- An environment where all stakeholders immediately grasp the value of circularity without extensive persuasion.
- A role focused purely on technical expertise without significant leadership and strategic influence.
ADHD Positives
- The constant need to juggle multiple, high-level strategic initiatives and rapidly shift focus between different business units and external pressures can be a strength.
- The ability to hyperfocus on complex, systemic problems, diving deep into the interconnectedness of global supply chains and business models, can lead to groundbreaking insights.
- The drive for innovation and challenging the status quo, pushing for radical change rather than incremental adjustments, aligns well with the transformative nature of the role.
ADHD Challenges and Accommodations
- The sheer volume of high-stakes, long-term strategic planning and detailed board reporting requires significant sustained attention; using AI tools for first drafts and detailed review by a Chief of Staff can help manage this.
- Managing a large, diverse team and numerous external relationships requires structured communication and delegation; leveraging executive assistants and clear communication protocols can be beneficial.
- The need for meticulous financial modelling and precise regulatory compliance demands a high degree of accuracy; implementing robust review processes and using advanced financial modelling software with built-in checks is crucial.
Dyslexia Positives
- Strong 'big picture' thinking and the ability to see complex patterns and connections across disparate data points, which is essential for systems thinking in circular economy.
- Excellent verbal communication and storytelling skills, crucial for influencing boards, investors, and C-suite peers, can be highly valued over written reports.
- Innovative problem-solving approaches, often finding non-obvious solutions to systemic challenges, can be a major asset in a field requiring fundamental change.
Dyslexia Challenges and Accommodations
- The extensive requirement for detailed written reports, board packs, and policy documents can be challenging; using dictation software, AI writing assistants for drafting, and a dedicated editorial support team (e.g., Chief of Staff) is highly recommended.
- Proofreading complex financial models and regulatory documents for accuracy is critical; robust review processes, automated checks, and reliance on specialised financial/legal teams are essential.
- Ensuring clarity and precision in all external communications, especially under public scrutiny, is paramount; having a strong communications team to refine and review messaging is key.
Autism Positives
- Exceptional ability to identify and analyse complex patterns and logical inconsistencies within vast datasets and intricate supply chains, leading to precise strategic recommendations.
- A deep, focused expertise in the technical aspects of circular economy (e.g., LCA methodologies, material science, policy frameworks) can provide unparalleled strategic depth.
- A preference for direct, fact-based communication, which can be highly effective in boardrooms and with investors seeking clear, data-driven insights.
Autism Challenges and Accommodations
- The role demands constant, high-stakes social interaction, negotiation, and political navigation with diverse stakeholders; having a trusted Chief of Staff to manage some external engagements and debriefing sessions can be helpful.
- Adapting to rapidly changing market dynamics, political landscapes, and investor demands requires significant flexibility; structured strategic planning processes with clear decision points can provide stability.
- Interpreting nuanced social cues and unstated expectations in executive meetings can be difficult; clear agendas, pre-reads, and direct feedback from trusted colleagues can aid navigation.
Sensory Considerations
This is a high-pressure, high-visibility role, typically based in a bustling corporate headquarters with frequent travel for board meetings, investor roadshows, and international policy engagements. Expect a dynamic social environment, often with open-plan offices, frequent meetings (both in-person and virtual), and public speaking events. Visual stimuli from presentations and data dashboards are constant. Sound levels can vary from quiet focused work to lively discussions. We can offer noise-cancelling headphones, flexible work arrangements where possible, and support for managing travel logistics.
Flexibility Notes
While this is a demanding C-suite role, we are committed to providing reasonable accommodations to ensure all our leaders can thrive. This includes flexibility in work location where feasible, access to assistive technologies, and support from executive assistants and Chiefs of Staff to help manage workload and communication styles. We believe diverse perspectives are critical for solving complex circular economy challenges, and we're here to support you.

How Zavmo Delivers This Role's Development

Zavmo maps your current competencies against all requirements in this job description through conversational assessment. We evaluate your foundation skills (communication, strategic thinking), functional skills (CRM expertise, negotiation), and readiness for career progression.
Output: Personalised skills gap heat map showing strengths and priorities, estimated time to competency, neurodiversity accommodations.
DISCUSS Phase: Personalised Learning Pathway
Based on your DISCOVER results, Zavmo creates a personalised learning plan prioritised by impact: foundation skills first, then functional skills. We adapt to your learning style, pace, and neurodiversity needs (ADHD, dyslexia, autism).
Output: Week-by-week schedule, each module linked to specific job responsibilities, checkpoints and milestones.
DELIVER Phase: Conversational Learning
Learn through conversation, not boring modules. Zavmo uses 10 conversation types (Socratic dialogue, role-play, coaching, case studies) to build competence. Practice difficult QBR presentations, negotiate tough renewals, and handle churn conversations in a safe AI environment before facing real clients.
Example: "For 'Stakeholder Mapping', Zavmo will guide you through analysing a complex enterprise account, identifying key decision-makers, and building an engagement strategy."
DEMONSTRATE Phase: Competency Assessment
Zavmo automatically builds your evidence portfolio as you learn. Every conversation, practice scenario, and application example is captured and mapped to NOS performance criteria. When ready, your portfolio supports OFQUAL qualification claims and demonstrates competence to employers.
Output: Competency matrix, evidence portfolio (downloadable), qualification readiness, career progression score.
